JAKARTA - The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) launched its Indonesia chapter on July 5, at the site of the future Signature Tower. The event was hosted by Signature Tower Jakarta and PDW Architects, drawing more than 100 participants.
Indonesia has been growing rapidly since Asia’s last financial crisis in the late 1990s. Driven by the increase in property values and land prices, the number of tall buildings in Jakarta’s Sudirman central business district has skyrocketed. Numerous 30-to-60-story developments are being constructed, alongside several supertall buildings.

At 111 stories and 638 meters, the Signature Tower Jakarta will become the tallest building in Indonesia, and is set to become the world’s fifth tallest building by 2020, according to the CTBUH report The Tallest 20 in 2020: Entering the Era of the Megatall.

Leo Barata of Signature Tower Jakarta delivered the welcoming remarks. He was followed by Tiyok Prasetyoadi, CTBUH Indonesia Country Representative and Managing Director at PDW Architects, who presented on Signature Tower’s design and features. PDW Architects is the architect of record responsible for design development of the building. The international team includes SRSS, Beca, Thornton Tomasetti, RWDI and Arup’s façade engineering division, while the local consultants are Gistama Intisemesta (structural engineering) and HPM (MEP engineering).
Attendees listen intently to the presentations
The closing presentation was given by CTBUH Executive Director Antony Wood, who placed the tall building developments in Indonesia in the context of global trends and explained the mission of CTBUH. Wood said that, while a skyscraper such as the Signature could be a city landmark, it truly would earn that status based on its ability to form a community around itself. "It should not only be notable for its height or for being a vertical extrusion of an efficient floor plan. It also should have a variety of textures and scales, working together in a harmonious design," he said.

"There is a new function that will be introduced, which is communal, and can open a new space for public recreation,” Wood continued. “However, the important thing is that a skyscraper is capable of creating a social relationship between people, buildings and the surrounding environment.”

A wide range of participants attended the two-hour event, including directors of architecture and engineering firms, developers, building material vendors and contractors, lingering on for networking well after the conclusion of presentations.

Though this was the first event of the Indonesia chapter, this was not the first CTBUH event in the country. Jakarta hosted the 1974 Conference on Tall Buildings, when the city had very few tall buildings.
