BANGKOK - As part of a growing campaign of outreach in Southeast Asia, the CTBUH Thailand Chapter launched on the site of Thailand’s next tallest building, the MahaNakhon, in Bangkok, June 24.
The CTBUH Thailand Chapter Representative, Khun Paisal Shusang, Deputy CEO and Commercial Director, Bouygues Thai Ltd., the construction firm building the MahaNakhon Tower, kicked off the event with his presentation, which explained the mission of the Council in Thailand.

“We would like the CTBUH Chapter to be the place -- your place – to exchange dialogue about questions related to the ambition of Thailand to develop more and more and reach new heights,” Shusang said. “We would like this Thailand Chapter to tackle all aspects of tall building, from planning and development, to design, construction and maintenance.”

Shushang noted that the Chapter planned to address specific conditions in Thailand, such as local codes, market trends, and soil conditions. Shushang also invited attendees to join a technical working group called the Bangkok CTBUH Advising Group, which would gather tall building specialists from around the country to generate best practices, design criteria and methods, and advise on future projects.

Khun Surapoj Techakraisri, CEO of PACE Development, the developer of MahaNakhon, detailed the development objective, financing approach, design and construction process of the new tower, designed by Ole Scheeren of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). He was joined by representatives of the tower’s structural engineers, Bouygues Thai Ltd (design), Robert Bird (peer review), and Civil Park (peer review).

CTBUH Executive Director Antony Wood then presented on Thailand’s relationship to global trends in tall buildings, including changes in aesthetics, materials, naming conventions (from corporate to regional or city names), and function, among others.

The presentation series was followed by about an hour of socializing at the site, a Dean and Deluca Café at the base of the future tower. The 314-meter tower is set to complete in 2015.
