Simon has over 30 years experience in design, construction and operation of mechanical, electrical building services systems for commercial, industrial, institutional and special purpose building projects. He has been with the Beca Group for 27 years having previously worked for a number of years in London. He has moved through the Beca ranks from a mechanical engineer to senior Technical Director for Buildings. Positions he has held include working in the Singapore office, secondments to client’s construction teams in Indonesia, leading the Auckland Building Services group, and leading the offshore design work for building projects in Indonesia. He is a director of Beca’s Indonesian company.
Simon has worked on and led the engineering design for many significant and complex building projects including two 300m+ observation and communications towers; in Auckland and in Macau, China; hotels, office towers, retail and residential developments and major mixed-use developments.
He has become conversant with and competent in al the systems engineering needed for buildings including vertical transportation, HVAC, electrical and on-site power generation, ICT, fire protection, hydraulics including water and wastewater treatment. He has also led design teams providing the civil, geotechnical and structural engineering, and fire engineering for large building projects.
Specialist projects have included those requiring analytical and CFD modeling to prove ventilation and smoke control solutions and the impact of stack and wind effects. He has a strong interest in energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable design and has carried out many energy audits and energy improvement projects. He managed the work that led to the first BCA Green Mark certification of a building in Indonesia.
Simon has led the Beca commercial buildings market in Indonesia for the last 15 years and has managed the design of building services systems for projects totally over four million square meters in the time. These have included the 420,000 square meter, three tower Pacific Place Jakarta, the two tower Plaza Indonesia office and residences, the 48-story Ritz Carlton Jakarta and the 650,000 square meter Gandaria City mixed-use development.
