CTBUH Plaques & Signboards as tokens of tall building recognition

The CTBUH believes that signs and signboards are a powerful and lasting way to recognize tall building mertits and inform the world about the achievements of new and existing tall buildings. Recognition can come in many ways. Naturally the tallest buildings in the world are eligable for a sign or plaque, but also the local tallest, buildings or the tallest by usage or materials are facts worth noting.

On October 8, 2004, the then CTBUH chairman Ron Klemencic handed over a plaque to TAIPEI101 Chairman and President
Harace Lineto recognize the tower as the new Tallest Building in the World at the time.

In 2005, the ten tallest buildings were offered a plaque. Amongst the recepients were the Shimao International Plaza in Shanghai, Q1 in Surfers Paradise and the Chongqing World Trade Center. In 2006 the idea to anually present a plaque to every Top-10 building for that year building was refined by handing out plaques which recognize an individual merit of a building. A good example of this is the plague that was handed to the owners of the Shanghai World Financial Center, which recognized the tower for having the highest occupied floor and the building with the biggest height measured to the top of the roof.

Other previously installed signboards include the Q1 Tower, Gold Coast, Australia, which recognizes the building at the time of completion as the world’s tallest residential tower, and the Tornado Tower, Doha, Qatar, which is recognized as the winner of the CTBUH Best Tall Building Award in the Middle East & Africa in 2009. Plans are afoot to install a similar sign at the newly-completed “world’s tallest” Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

We very much welcome and encourage companies to follow the examples of these buildings and cooperate with the CTBUH to install more skyscraper signs throughout the globe. If interested, please contact CTBUH Executive Director Antony Wood at awood@ctbuh.org.
