China, September 2014
On the weekend immediately following the conference, 60 or so delegates continued on to experience other cities around China, with itineraries hosted and organized by the developers and consultants behind some of the key buildings in that city.

Attendees of the Beijing tour, kindly organized by Citic Heye Invesment, toured the new CBD development on the east side of town, projected to contain 15 towers, many of whose foundations were already visibly underway. The Great Wall of China and CCTV headquarters building were also highlights, representing ancient and present China’s monumental works in dramatic fashion.

The tour, kindly organized by Broad Group, began with the Broad Sustainable Building (BSB) campus including the New-Ark Hotel. The building took less than one week to construct, thanks to the simplicity of BSB’s prefabrication system. The group also visited Broad’s construction site of a 59-story tower, which is to contain a whole city with residences, offices, shops and an internal pedestrian street.

Hong Kong

The tour, kindly organized by Arquitectonica and AIA Hong Kong, began at Hong Kong’s One Island East, a 298-meter office building, taking the lift to the 67th floor for a presentation and a wonderful view. Attendees ascended to level 102, where they were treated to an elegant lunch at Tosca Restaurant. Next up was the Sky100 observation deck and the world’s highest cocktail lounge, Ozone. The day concluded with a harbor cruise on a Chinese junk, the Aqualuna.

After getting the high speed train from Shanghai, the Nanjing tour, kindly organized by Suning Real Estate Group and NBBJ, started with a lunch presentation about the 850,000 squaremeter mixed-use Suning Gulou Ruicheng. The last stop was Jinao Tower, taking in the Fairmont Hotel, apartments and retail, and a hosted lunch at Altitude on the 60th floor.

The Shenzhen tour was kindly organized by Shenzhen Ping An Finance Center Construction & Development Co., Ltd. Attendees toured the sky lobby and structural transfer floors at the midpoint of Ping An Finance Center. Attendees were treated to a fine, traditional Chinese lunch at the neighboring Four Seasons Hotel. KK100, the world’s 10th tallest building, also hosted a presentation and viewing on the 40th floor.

The Suzhou tour, kindly organized by Zhongnan Group, allowed delegates to see the ongoing installation of the foundation work on the Suzhou Zhongnan Center site. After a great 12-course lunch, the group toured the International Fortune Plaza, for a presentation about the towers, and a look at the large-scale model of the project. Attendees then toured one of the two towers, which had just had its topping-out ceremony the day prior.
