We have received many good wishes and enquiries of concern regarding Frank Zabel, the architect of the Tornado Tower Qatar, who unfortunately collapsed on stage at our Chicago conference in October. We are very pleased to report that Frank is on the mend now and has sent a message to colleagues.

Members of CTBUH staff had a unique opportunity to see the in and outs of the Willis Tower in Chicago, from the very top to the deepest bottom as a post-Chicago conference bonus, courtesy of owners American Landmark Properties. The tour included the new cantilevering glass 'ledges' and a trip to the roof of America's tallest.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH)—the international body that arbitrates on tall building height and determines the title of “The World’s Tallest Building”—has announced a change to its height criteria, as a reflection of recent developments with several super-tall buildings.

Linked Hybrid is the “Best Tall Building Overall” for 2009, announced at the CTBUH 8th Annual Awards Dinner, October 22nd at the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. Also recognized were the two Lifetime Achievement winners and the four Best Tall Building regional winners.

This interesting study examines the energy/carbon implications of building materials compared with operating energy/carbon, with some surprising results e.g. the embodied energy of cyclical fit-out of an office building is roughly equivalent to a quarter of operating energy over the building’s lifetime.

Entitled ‘Vertical Communities’, this design studio called for mixed-use planning, acknowledging the human factor in a socially, economically and environmentally-sustainable future as perhaps the most important element neglected by modern tall building designs.

As part of the extensive Chicago Skyscraper Summer Tour Program, CTBUH members toured the Legacy Legacy at Millennium Park, Aqua Tower, Blue Cross / Blue Shield Headquarters and Trump International Hotel & Tower projects. CTBUH staff also had the opportunity to view these projects from the air during a helicopter tour.

19th June. The crown jewel of Chicago’s Lakeshore East master planned community, Aqua Tower, was the subject for the second in the series of CTBUH Summer Tours. Thirty-six tall building enthusiasts joined the two-hour technical tour led by members of McHugh Construction Company and Studio Gang Architects.

As part of the ever-expanding database on tall buildings, new lists have been added to the CTBUH website recently, including  Austria, Kazakhstan, Scandinavia, Belgium, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. CTBUH is also currently working on an interactive version of the tallest database.

Students from the University of Nottingham recently visited Chicago as part of a tall building design studio collaboration with the ‘Remaking of Mumbai’ studio at IIT. The visit facilitated knowledge exchange and interaction between the students.

Burj Dubai tops out, set for completion in Sept.
The Burj Dubai, set to be the world's next tallest building, finally reached its final height on January 17, 2009. Not yet confirmed by owner-developer Emaar, this final height is rumored to be 818 meters now that the spire is in place. Also, the building is set for a soft opening on 09/09/09.

Topping the list of the tallest buildings completed in 2008 is the 492m Shanghai World Financial Center.
