CTBUH running up the Willis Tower
Sunday, 14 November 2010 was that one time of the year when one is allowed to climb up all of the 2,109 stairs to the 103rd floor of Chicago's Willis Tower. Representing the tall building industry, several CTBUH staffers considered this a unique opportunity and bravely signed up it.

Visit to the 300 North LaSalle Tower, Chicago
On Wednesday, November 3,  CTBUH staffers participated in a tour of the 300 North LaSalle Building in downtown Chicago. Developed by Hines, the 60-story, the building traded in for $503 per square foot, shattering Chicago’s pricing record.

CTBUH-IUAV Tall Building event, Venice
The symposium 'Tall Buildings - Technical constraints of high rise buildings' on 22nd on November is organized by IUAV and CTBUH. The lectures give an overview of selected technical aspects of high-rise design and include a presentation of the Federation Tower in Moscow and of St. Petersburg Bank.

PhD Program November 2010

IIT PhD Research Studio Uploaded
As part of the Council's bid to expand the scope of its Design Research library, the CTBUH has added the first PhD in Architecture program to the website. The program, based at IIT, is comprised of three major research themes: Structure, Sustainability and Form; Computational Architecture; and Energy Efficiency.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat was involved as a coordinating partner, exhibitor and speaker at Deep Foundation Institute’s 35th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Hollywood, CA from Tuesday 12 – Friday 15 October 2010.

Following the CTBUH 9th Annual Awards Dinner & Ceremony, the CTBUH Leadership team met again bright and early on the morning of Friday 22nd October, on the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago for their annual Leaders Meeting.

CTBUH Keynote Speaker at Yekaterinburg Tall Building Conference
Communications Manager and Journal Editor Jan Klerks was invited to represent the CTBUH and, as such, he presented on and discussed the topic of ‘The Development of Tall Buildings in a European Context’.

2010 Awards Symposium
For the first time, the CTBUH organized an Awards Symposium preceding the annual Awards Dinner. Here, regional award winning projects were introduced by representatives from both the building owners and the architects while lifetime award winners reflected upon their careers.

2010 Best Tall Building Announced
In a surprise move, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) bestowed a new award on the Burj Khalifa at its annual “Best Tall Buildings Awards Ceremony” on Thursday evening, 21st October.

Ysrael Seinuk Passing
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is saddened to learn of the recent passing of engineer Ysrael Seinuk, founder of Ysrael A. Seinuk PC. Mr. Seinuk was recently named the CTBUH 2010 Fazlur Khan Lifetime Achievement Medal winner.

Korea Chapter 2010 Conference: Report
The Korean CTBUH Conference 2010 was held at Seoul Olympic Parktel Olympia Hall and hosted by CTBUH Korea on August 27, 2010. The conference was deemed a success with 350 experts and professionals participating from a variety of disciplines.

The CTBUH Journal 2010, Issue III, has been translated into Korean, for distribution in Korea by the Korean CTBUH. Copies were distributed to participants of the Korean CTBUH Conference in Seoul on August 27th, and are also available for other professionals and scholars.

As part of the ever-expanding database on tall buildings, major updates have been added to the Historical Tallest Buildings in the World and the Tallest Buildings by Nation list. The database contains information on 10,000+ buildings free for download and searchable by a number of parameters.

Second Meeting of the CTBUH Qatar Chapter Announced
On Monday September 27, the Qatar chapter of the CTBUH will organize its second regional meeting. Speakers from Texas A&M University and Davis Langdon will address the topic of "Form Over Function - Lessons Learned with Iconic Buildings".

CTBUH Japanese Chapter
Building on similar chapters recently formed in Korea, South Africa and Qatar, a CTBUH Japanese Chapter has been established within the International Committee of the Japanese Society of Steel Construction, under the leadership of Akira Wada, Yukio Tamura and Masayoshi Nakai.

The FBCI is looking for partners
The Form Based Codes Institute has received a generous challenge grant of $10,000 for three years from the Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust to offer Form-Based Codes education internationally. The FBCI is looking for partners in three countries to offer a week-long training on Form-Based Coding.

William F. Baker P.E., S.E., FASCE, FIStructE, Structural Engineering Partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) has been recognized with a 2011 Outstanding Projects And Leaders (OPAL) Lifetime Award for Design from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The result of Chris Abel’s latest Vertical Architecture Studio (VAST) conducted at the University Of New South Wales is now available. VAST, which marks a departure from conventional high-rise studies, was created to explore the possibilities and implications of the new movement for tall building urban form.

CTBUH Research Meeting, Venice
On 17-18 June 2010, the CTBUH held the inaugural meeting of its Research, Academic & Postgraduate Working Group. Taking place in the unforgettable city of Venice, the meeting attracted much attention from both academia and industry, resulting in the attendance of 76 researchers representing 60 institutions.

Piraeus Tower 2010
The results of the CTBUH supported Piraeus Tower architectural competition have been announced. The focus of the competition was the re-design of the face of the second tallest building in Athens, an unfinished project since 1974. CTBUH Executive Director, Antony Wood, and CTBUH Board of Trustee, Tim Johnson, served on the competition jury.

First regional meeting of the CTBUH Qatar Chapter a success
On May 31, 2010, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat organized the first regional meeting of the CTBUH Qatar Chapter. This event was held at the Tornado Tower, winner of CTBUH Best Tall Building in the Middle East for 2009. The meeting was attended by 60 people.

2009/10 Design Research: The Remaking of Mumbai
Design research projects from the recently completed tall building design studio at IIT are now available on the CTBUH website. The studio produced six individual projects that each address serious problems within the heart of Mumbai.

CTBUH Executive Director Antony Wood has returned from an important trip to Shanghai and Seoul. Marshall Gerometta wins the 1st CTBUH Golf Tournament
On June 4th, the first CTBUH’s Annual Golf Tournament took place. After all score cards were turned in and adjusted for personal handicaps, CTBUH's database editor Marshall Gerometta emerged as the overall winner with an excellent score of 89.

CTBUH presents plaque to Maas Tower in Rotterdam
CTBUH Communications Manager Jan Klerks handed over a height recognition plaque to OVG's Coen van Oostrom, recognizing the Maas Tower (Maastoren in Dutch) in Rotterdam as the new tallest building in the Netherlands at 164.75 meters / 541.52 feet.

Mine the Gap

What to do with a big hole in the ground? This question was the focus of the 2010 Chicago Prize Competition called MINE THE GAP, organized by the Chicago Architecture Club. The CTBUH acted as supporter of the competition. Also, CTBUH’s executive director Antony Wood served as one of the jurors.

Join us to see the results of the 2010 CTBUH-IIT Mumbai high rise studio, as well as other student work, at the IIT College of Architecture end of year show. On Friday, April 16, the Congress Hotel in Chicago was the host for the finale of the 2nd National Mock Firms Skyscraper Challenge. Like last year, CTBUH’s Antony Wood and Jan Klerks cooperated as jurors.Klerks also presented on Global Trends in Tall Buildings during the seminar.

On a rainy Chicago Wednesday, April 6, the CTBUH gathered with members of the Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago  project team for the inauguration of the building signboard which recognizes Trump Tower's place in the international tall building world.

William Baker and David Scott honored
Two CTBUH Trustees have recently received significant honors. William F. Baker of SOM has been recognized with the Gold Medal from The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), and David Scott of Arup has been recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Founding of CTBUH chapter in South Africa
In its move to expand tall building knowledge & sustainable best practice internationally, the Council has established a Chapter in South Africa. The initiative is driven by Alastair Collins, recently retired as Davis Langdon's Global Chief Exec, and now CTBUH country representative for South Africa.

Best Tall Building Awards - deadline this month
The Council awards five Best Tall Building and two Lifetime Achievement awards annually. All nominated buildings must have been completed between 1st Jan 2009 - 1st Oct 2010. Deadline for receipt of nominations is April 30th, 2010.

Staff April 2010

CTBUH staff changes
The Council is announcing some changes to its organizational and staffing structure for 2010 and beyond. Following the relocation of the Council Headquarters to Chicago in 2004, CTBUH Manager of Operations Geri Kery - who has been with the Council for the past 28 years - will be stepping down at the end of this year.

CTBUH Running Up Skyscrapers
CTBUH's communication manager Jan Klerks and CTBUH volunteer John Lindbloom participated in the annual Fight-For-Air Climb, involving all four skyscrapers of the Presidential Towers complex in Chicago. With a combined 180 floors and 2,340 steps, it's the longest urban stair climbing contest in the world.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is saddened to learn of the recent passing of several CTBUH members and architects who made significant contributions to the field of tall buildings. Lalit Gandhi, Bruce Graham, Yuri Granik, Der Scutt, Frank Williams, and Professor Ding Dajun.

Tallest Trends and the Burj Khalifa
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has received and examined detailed drawings of the Burj Khalifa submitted by building owner Emaar, and can now confirm the official building height at 828.00 meters (2716.54 feet), as well as the title of “The World’s Tallest Building.” With the official completion of the building.

Bruce Graham Passing
The CTBUH is saddened to learn of the recent passing of architect Bruce Graham, formerly with Skidmore Owings and Merrill. His influence on the Council’s hometown of Chicago was profound; one cannot look upon the city skyline without seeing the influence of Graham’s legacy, including the Willis Tower and John Hancock Center.

The Council is pleased to announce its support of the 2010 Chicago Prize Competition: MINE THE GAP - organized by The Chicago Architectural Club. The competition seeks theoretical design proposals for the Chicago Spire site - currently a large hole in the ground until (hopefully) the project picks up momentum again.

CTBUH Chairman Professor Sang Dae Kim convened a meeting of the three East Asia Country Representatives and himself in Jeju, Korea, on 22-23 January, to discuss strengthening of CTBUH activities in the region. Several CTBUH Leaders were in attendance in the VIP section at the Burj Khalifa official opening on 4th January, including CTBUH Trustee William Baker of SOM, Height Committee Chair Peter Weismantle of AS+GG, and Advisory Group member Ahmad Abdelrazaq of Samsung Construction.

CTBUH 2010 Mumbai Conference
3-5 Feb, Renaissance Hotel, Mumbai. With only two days to go we’re looking forward to what’s undoubtedly going to be another information-packed and important business-networking event in Mumbai. There are currently over 600 people registered for the event, with 72 international and local speakers planned across the three days, to debate how existing cities can re-make themselves to support more sustainable patterns of life, and whether tall buildings can be a part of that.

The Ten Tallest Buildings Completed in 2009
The year 2009 marked a successful 12 months for the American skyscraper, with three of the five tallest buildings completed during the year being located in the USA—Trump International Hotel & Tower, Bank of America Tower and Aqua.

Promotional Tour for Mumbai Conference
Executive Director Antony Wood undertook a promotional tour of India for the Mumbai conference. Taking in Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune where a combined total of close to 1000 people attended presentations and cocktail parties.  Also included in Mumbai was a round-table discussion with prominent Indian VIP’s.

Burj Dubai becomes Burj Khalifa and Height Announced

The Burj Dubai has officially completed as the World’s Tallest Building. Announced by owner –developer Emaar at a height of 828 meters (2,717) feet, this height has still to be ratified by CTBUH upon receipt of official architectural drawings. The building’s official name has also changed to Burj Khalifa.

New CTBUH Tall Building database launched
The Council has launched a new interactive tall building database for 2010. Containing information on over 10,000 tall buildings – including images as well as location, height, function, number of floors, structural material, etc – users can create their own lists and export them to pdf.

The first of four issues of the CTBUH Journal 2010 includes articles on the Standard Hotel, New York; The Remaking of Mumbai; The Structural Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings, a report on the CTBUH height criteria change, and several features such as a review of Tall Buildings completed in 2009.

CTBUH to play Accreditation role in new Nottingham Masters Course
The course, coordinated by Philip Oldfield and David Nicholson-Cole at the University of Nottingham, explores the sustainable design of tall buildings. CTBUH Executive Director, Antony Wood, recently visited to undertake an initial review of the course, and to meet the students.
