Video Interviews – 2011 Awards Symposium

Seven interviews were conducted by CTBUH Special Media Correspondent, Jeff Herzer, in conjunction with the 2011 Awards Symposium at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago on November 3rd 2011.

Adrian Smith, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, Chicago

Adrian Smith, recipient of the 2011 CTBUH Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award speaks about his tall buildings career. He talks on a significant number of tall buildings in which he was involved including the recently announced one kilometer tall Kingdom Tower project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Akira Wada, Architectural Institute of Japan, Tokyo

Dr. Wada, recipient of the 2011 Fazlur R. Khan Lifetime Achievement Medal, has contributing greatly to the understanding and development of tall building structures in seismically active regions.

Toby Blunt, Foster + Partners, London

Toby speaks about The Index in Dubai which is the 2011 Best Tall Building Middle East & Africa winner.  He speaks about the inspirations and design challenges of creating a sustainable mixed-use tower in its climatic context.

Axel Hinterthan, KfW Bankengruppe, Frankfurt and Matthias Sauerbruch &  Louisa Hutton, Sauerbruch Hutton, Berlin

The winner of the 2011 Best Tall Building Europe, KfW Westarkade in Frankfurt, is also the winner of the Overall Best Tall Building Worldwide.  Axel, Matthias, & Louisa speak on one of the most energy-efficient office buildings in the world.

Werner Sobek, Werner Sobek Engineers, Stuttgart

Werner Sobek is founder of Werner Sobek Group, one of the world’s leading engineering consultancies.  He speaks on sustainability and lightweight structures as well as his contribution to KfW Westarkade in Frankfurt, which is the 2011 Best Tall Building Europe winner.

Joseph, John, & Craig speak on Eight Spruce Street in New York which is the 2011 Best Tall Building Americas winner.  They also share an inside look at how each unique floor plate was carefully designed to efficiently marry the fabric-like facade.

Chris Wilkinson &  Dominic Bettison, Wilkinson Eyre Architects, London, and Michael Kwok & Craig Gibbons, Arup, Shanghai

The winner of the 2011 Best Tall Building Asia & Australasia, Guangzhou IFC in Guangzhou, China, is also the tallest of the four regiounal winners.  Chris, Dominic, Michael & Craig speak on the world's tallest constructed diagrid structure.
